Your situation: You are in the main part of the house. You look out the window and see a man sitting on the porch admiring pleasure boats on the lake of the estate. His robes blow behind him. Someone tells you his name is Fujiwara Michinaga. He is known throughout the court for his interest in his appearance. It is said that he once kept the empress and her attendants waiting while he had a new robe sewn because he did not want them to see him in the same outfit he had worn at another event.  The man turns toward you.

Your problem: How should you treat this man so that you do not endanger your social or political position? Should you ignore him because he is considered a fool at the court? Should you bow to him because he is highly respected at the court? Or should you smile at him since he is your equal and you want to seem friendly?

Your solution: Click below to discover how you are supposed to treat this man. In your notes, describe what you will do and why. Then complete the notes for this section.
